The USDA’s most recent weekly crop progress report shows planting and early emergence moving ahead of normal in many areas. 57% corn planted nationwide, above the five-year average of 52%, and 23% of the corn crop has emerged, up from 13% the prior week. The report covers planting activity reported by state offices and consolidates national percentages for key row crops.

Soybean planting and early emergence also exceeded averages in the latest USDA numbers. 49% soybeans planted nationally, compared with a five-year average of 36%, and about 20% of the soybean crop has emerged. Those gains follow several weeks of warm soil temperatures and limited planting delays in major soybean-producing states.

Winter wheat condition slipped slightly in the newest assessment, falling to 28% rated good to excellent, down from 31% the previous week. Pasture and range conditions were rated 31% good to excellent, a small uptick from 30% reported a week earlier, reflecting localized improvements where spring moisture arrived.

Planting progress

Spring wheat was reported 53% planted and 23% emerged, a pace the USDA described as near the five-year average. Cotton planting reached 29% complete, which the report lists as in line with the five-year average; no major planting disruptions were noted in cotton-growing districts.

Rice and sorghum showed strong planting progress in the national summary. 84% rice planted with 69% of rice emerged, both well ahead of typical timing, while sorghum was 25% planted, modestly above its five-year average in the report.

Conditions and other crops

The USDA’s summary aggregates weekly reports from field offices and includes both planting percentages and crop condition ratings for major commodities. The national report timetable shows these weekly crop progress and condition updates will continue through the end of November, providing growers and markets with regular planting and development benchmarks.
