World food prices index grew by 1,2% in May

In May, 2018 world food prices index determined by FAO analysts constituted 176,2 points. The indicator grew by 1,2% in comparison with the last month and exceeded by 1,9%  indicator of May 2017.

It was due to increase in price of dairy products. Grain products prices grew at the same time less considerably. Cost of meat products changed poorly whereas prices for vegetable oils and sugar continued to decrease, FAO reports.

As it is specified, grain price index constituted 172,9 points in May that is 2,4% higher than April level and by 17% higher than the same indicator was in May, 2017. Index grows for several months and since the beginning of 2018 gained 10%. At the same time in May growth of the indicator was caused, first of all, by concerns of rather possible reduction of grain production volumes in main exporting countries.

Price index for vegetable oils constituted 150,6 points  in May that is 2,6% less, than in April. It was caused by decrease in quotations of soy, palm and sunflower oils while prices for rape oil in May began to grow again, specialists explain.

Sugar price index decreased by 0,5% in comparison with  last month, up to 175,3 points, also for 0,5% for meat, up to 169,6 points whereas for dairy products the index has grown by 5,5%, up to 215,2 points.
