Scientists used the data of researches conducted in 1996-2016
for the analysis. The productivity, quality of grain and speed of decomposition of biomass of genetically modified and regular corn and also interaction of plants were compared to other organisms, for example, insects.
It became clear that cultivation of genetically modified varieties allows to collect 5 — 25% more grain from the same area (depending on the region). Also GM-corn is affected less by 29 — 36% by mycotoxins as it is steady against impact of insects which transfer mold mushrooms spores and damage plants, that creates suitable environment for reproduction of mushrooms.
Corn is the second most popular of genetically modified cultures around the world after soy. Its crops around the world occupy 95,9 million hectares - it is about a third of all areas sown with corn. The biggest part of transgene corn crops is in the USA, Brazil, Argentina and Canada.
